Rollin' 'Gainst the Grain
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Runnin' through the rain,
We were
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Runnin' through the rain,
We were
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
When I was young, I got into my car
Gotta leave Kentucky, so I drove real far
Dragged myself away to an Oklahoma store
On dismal Cherokee lands, but found a little more
A woman came over as I was geared to go,
What she had to tell me,
Well I surely didn't know
She lay down a child
In my car's front seat
I could argue all night long
But I'd still admit defeat
Well this baby was mine,
So what could I do?
It was plain to see my plans
Of being childless were through
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Runnin' through the rain,
We were
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Runnin' through the rain,
We were
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Took a drive for a while. and you didn't make a sound
Gave you a bath at the first refuge I found
A little girl I know, but sadly that's not all
Bruises up and down, I just had to hit the wall
That's when I knew how hard your past had been
Not just Cherokee, but female Indian
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Runnin' through the rain,
We were
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Runnin through the rain,
We were
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
I had to work to keep you
So I rode through the Arizona desert
There was so much going through my mind
Like, would I have to let you go away
Back to the life that you had known,
But I had come to love you and gave you a home.
And I thought about injustice in this world
That would let someone hurt a baby girl
And then leave, sight unseen
And what does it say
Bout the world anyway
When a girl is given away
To the government
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Runnin' through the rain,
We were
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Runnin' through the rain,
We were
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Things have gotten better
As we've driven
Back into our lives
And sometimes through tragedy
I guess with strength and hope
We can survive
I feel as those we've grown so close
In so little time
All because my car broke down
And nobody else would come around
To get you
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Runnin' through the rain,
We were
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
Runnin' through the rain,
We were
Rollin' 'gainst the grain
